One should have the right to death. Euthanasia is again a topic in the House

“Euthanasia is already happening today, but no one is talking about it in public, and we want to change that,” one of the translators of the law, Lukáš Bartoň (Pirates), told Novinka.

According to the norm on which the Pirates cooperate with the members of the YES movement, a person suffering from an incurable disease would be free to decide whether to end his own life.

“One of the greatest values we recognize in our society is human freedom. But we are still closing our eyes to the free decision at the end of life. We close our eyes to the wish of patients in the terminal stage of the disease to die calmly and with dignity, and we deny them the opportunity to leave the world according to their wishes, ”added Bartoň.

The doctor must not be forced to euthanize

According to MEPs, a person who decides to end his life voluntarily must be of legal age and at the same time it must be clearly demonstrated that there is no chance of cure.

“The patient most often makes a request through a general practitioner. The doctor fills in the requisites and clear criteria must be given. No doctor is obliged to perform or assist in an assisted death, ”stressed YES MP Věra Procházková.

Euthanasia does not only have to be performed in a hospital, but also in a home environment and may include a family.

The law further defines exactly what palliative care is and who is a palliative patient. Palliative care in general is the care of a terminally ill patient in his or her recent period. Its goal is to alleviate pain and other physical and mental distress, preserve the patient’s dignity and provide support to his loved ones.

The bill is inspired by neighboring states. While in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg it is legal for a patient to be killed directly by a doctor at his request. In Germany and Switzerland, only so-called assisted suicide is legal.

According to Procházková and Bartona, the draft now has the support of about 20 deputies out of 200 deputies. At this stage, the deputies of KDU-ČSL and TOP 09 already opposed it. In the first reading, the submitters would like to discuss the standard by the end of 2020. If the law passes, it could come into force in 2023.
