One place many people forget to think about the danger of infection

The corona pandemic has turned upside down a lot. Many of us have, among other things, for the first time bought a bandage and used it when we have traveled outside among many others.

There is a completely different focus on cleaning and disinfection than just a few months ago. Nevertheless, there are still some areas many may not think of in this regard.

One of them is the car. Norwegian cars are rarely washed inside, a new survey shows.

Half of the car fleet has to make do with interior cleaning every six months or even less often. It shows a survey conducted by YouGov, for the Automobile Industry Suppliers Association (ABL).

16 percent state that the car is only washed inside once a year. Three percent admit that it never happens.

Few do it every month

– The car’s compartment is in reality a living room that many people spend a lot of time in. Therefore, it should be cleaned as routinely as when we use the cloth at home. In a time with a high risk of virus infection, this has become even more important than before, says Arild Hansen, general manager of ABL.

Just over a third of those surveyed wash the inside of the car two to three times in six months. 30 percent tick every six months.

Only 15 percent do it at least once a month.

Many of us spend a lot of time in the car, then it is also a point to keep it clean here.

Full disinfection

– Habits have hardly changed since we asked consumers the same question seven years ago. We had probably hoped for a certain improvement now, especially because we are all otherwise so preoccupied with virus control, says Hansen, in a press release.

He points out that a large selection of car care products has made the interior cleaning much easier than before, at the same time as there are a large number of professional providers.

Now a method for full disinfection of the passenger compartment is also being rolled out.

Wear protective equipment

– A few workshops are trying this out now. We expect the service to be widely available within a few weeks, says Tom Roger Hammer, general manager of Billakkspesialisten AS, which in collaboration with the British developer company will offer the technology to Norwegian industry players.

The process requires some technical equipment and access to compressed air. The work with the disinfection also presupposes the use of protective equipment. Therefore, it is intended that it is basically the car repair shops that will be able to carry out the disinfection.

– The treatment only takes about three minutes, and the car is ready for use after another five minutes of operation. The manufacturer promises that the method is very effective, and kills 99.99 percent of all viruses and bacteria, including Covid-19, says Hammer.

The air conditioner also needs a cleaning from time to time, this is noticed, among other things, by the fact that over time it can become painful and “trapped” odor in the car.

New and unknown

He estimates that the treatment will cost a few hundred bucks.

In the survey from ABL, 20 percent state that it is quite or very likely that they will use such a service. Two-thirds answer that it is unlikely or very unlikely. 13 percent tick for do not know.

– The restraint must probably be seen in light of the fact that this is new and unknown to most people. But the risk of virus infection is something we have to live with for a long time, so eventually we will probably see that many will use both this and other similar services, says Arild Hansen.
