The historian’s judgment was tough: “The history of your bank is exciting at the beginning and then boring for 199 years.” But Roland Moser, the manager of the Burgerliche Ersparniskasse Bern, is not saddened by this judgment – on the contrary: The small financial institution should remain as unspectacular as possible.
Precisely because comparatively little has changed at the bank since it was founded in 1820, the Burgerliche Ersparniskasse is now a curiosity in the Swiss banking landscape. With six employees – including the boss – and 290 million francs in customer funds, the savings fund is one of the smallest banks in the country.
