One of the most sought-after products this week is eggs. This year, Easter daisies will be more expensive than in previous years. The cost of printing them has also increased.

In the Gargžda consumer cooperative store “Aibė”, 10 white eggs cost 2.34 EUR, and brown eggs – 2.10 EUR. According to the seller, last year a box of white eggs cost only 1.60 EUR, and before that – only 99 cents. In the “Vasara” store, eggs are one of the best-selling products. “We didn’t get the white ones, only the brown ones for EUR 2.39. Eggs are not expensive before Easter”, assured the owner Jadvyga Skuodienė. In shopping centers, you can choose from the cheapest, 1.29 EUR for ten (with discount), up to 2.99 EUR. And whatever names you can read on the boxes: “rustic” (2.49 EUR), “happy eggs” (2.65 EUR), “chickens kept on litter” (1.79 EUR) (with a discount), “hard” eggs – free range hens (2.99 EUR), “hard eggs from caged hens” (2.59 EUR). The names are attractive, meeting the need for quality products. Some choose the cheapest, others are tempted by the name on the box and pay more. Home-grown, free-range chicken eggs can be bought directly from small farmers, and the Gargžda market was in short supply this week. The only seller offered 10 homemade eggs for 3 euros. You could also buy small decorative chicken eggs for 2 EUR. In other towns and villages, homemade eggs were cheaper: in Veiviržėnai or Endrievai – 2.50 EUR. In the village of Klemiškės II, Sendvaris ward, the Plauškas, who maintain a poultry farm, ran out of eggs this year, although they keep 500 laying hens. “The number of buyers has increased – since spring, they all buy from home. Before Easter, people waited in line for a couple of weeks for eggs – we sold according to the list”, said Silvestra Plauškienė. This year, farmers raised the price of eggs from chickens kept in a well-equipped henhouse that meets animal welfare requirements: 10 costs 3 EUR or 3.3 EUR, but smaller eggs cost 1.50-2.00 EUR. “Our chickens are happy – our customers are happy too,” smiled the farmer. In the Veiviržėnai craft center this week, education was held, which was attended by people from the community, children, and people receiving social rehabilitation services. They learned how to print eggs with wax. The administrator of the center, folk artist Aurelė Pociuvienė noticed that the price of egg dyes has also increased.
