Omicron Fierce, Australia Experience Deadliest Day

Canberra

Australia had the deadliest day of the entire pandemic corona virus (COVID-19), by scoring the most additional deaths in a day. This situation occurs when varian Omicron which spread rapidly continued to trigger an increase in the number of hospitalizations to a record.

As reported Reuters, Tuesday (18/1/2022), Australia is facing the worst Corona outbreak in its region, driven by the Omicron variant which has recently placed more patients in hospitals and intensive care units.

A total of 74 deaths from Corona were reported in a day, on Tuesday (18/1) local time, originating from the three most populous states in Australia, namely New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

That number surpassed the previous record high, when 57 deaths were recorded in a day on Thursday (13/1).

Of the highest total deaths in a day, about 36 of them were recorded in the state of New South Wales, which is home to the city of Sydney — the highest record for additional daily deaths in the state.

“Today has been a very difficult day for our state,” New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet told a news conference.

Perrottet is known to consistently waive strict restrictions for his territory under the pretext of high rates of Corona vaccinations. He reiterated that hospitals in New South Wales would be able to cope with the increase in patient admissions.

“While there are challenges, they are not unique to the rest of the world,” he said.
