Hundreds of arrests were made in New York this week over protests against police brutality that broke out in the United States following the death of black detainee George Floyd. Floyd died in Minneapolis on May 25 after a white police officer put his knee on Floyd’s neck for minutes during an arrest for a non-violent crime.
After the protests led to looting on Sunday and Monday, the Mayor of New York instituted a curfew. It was largely ignored by peaceful activists. The police made hundreds of arrests for violating the curfew.
In a statement, Manhattan prosecutor Cyrus Vance said his office “refuses to prosecute these detainees for the sake of justice.”
