OM: Confused man in Halsteren was not killed by a police bullet NOW

The confused man who seriously injured himself on Saturday morning in Halsteren with a knife and eventually died, was not killed by a police bullet, the Public Prosecution Service announced on Saturday evening. Officers had fired a shot to save the man from worse grief.

A check on the body shows that officers hit him in the lower leg. However, that is not the man’s direct cause of death. The exact cause has yet to be determined.

Police officers were reported Saturday morning from a man who was injuring himself with a knife. On the spot they tried to address the man, which failed. Nor did an attempt to control him with pepper spray catch on.

To protect the man for himself, a shot was fired. Although several emergency services came to the scene, including a trauma helicopter, aid was of no avail. The officers were released with a fright.

The State Criminal Investigation Department nevertheless initiated an investigation. This is a standard procedure when an agent has used his weapon and may have been injured.
