Olga Menzelová took care of her husband Jiří until the last moment. So that the director would not have to spend time in the care of doctors, the triple mother equipped the room directly in the house, which had the same equipment as in the hospital. However, this act resulted in a widow’s package, and all the savings for the children allegedly fell on the construction of the room.
In November 2017, Jiří Menzel underwent a meningococcal infection, due to which he had to undergo several hours of surgery, and doctors subsequently put him to artificial sleep.
As a miracle, the director managed to overcome the serious situation and in March 2018 he was transferred to a rehabilitation clinic in Malvazinky, where he learned to speak and walk again.
Menzel then underwent additional treatment at several clinics until his wife Olga took him into home care in September of the same year.
All the savings fell on the room
Olga Menzelová had her husband arrange a special room in the house with the devices the director needed for his life. In addition, Menzel had a nurse at his disposal, which was not exactly a cheap affair. Today, Menzelová admits that this dedication cost her all the savings.
“Jirka got into a difficult situation if we did not use the savings for the girls who were saved for school, if I did not earn and take care of the family, then we will never be able to afford to have Jirka at home with this constant care for two years,” she said. podcast for Czech Radio Two.
Jirka was not rich
In the above-mentioned program, Menzelová also declassified how her late husband had finances. “Jirka was not rich, what he didn’t do, he didn’t have. He was a very impractical man,” the mother of three surprised.
Among other things, the widow explained how a free marriage with Menzel worked. Olga had a total of three children, but the director was the father of only Eva’s middle daughter. “Jirka has always said for years, darling, I love you so much and we will never leave, but I want you to be happy. And so we gave ourselves this freedom, but with the condition that we will not leave. And I would it never occurred to me that I would leave Jirka and not take care of him when he needed it, and that is a marital promise for me, for better or for worse, “says Menzelová.
Menzelová and Jaroslav Brabec have a daughter, Anička, and her youngest son, Albert, and Egyptologist Miroslav Bárta.
