With today’s successful launch of the JUICE probe, a piece of OHB technology is flying in the direction of Jupiter. The communication subsystem for the probe comes from Antwerp Space, a subsidiary of the space company OHB. JUICE will spend three and a half years studying Jupiter’s atmosphere, magnetosphere, rings and large icy moons Ganymede, Europa and Callisto. The climax of the mission will be the orbit of the icy moon Ganymede. At the end of the mission there is a crash: the probe is planned to crash on the moon’s surface in 2034.

Antwerp Space has carried out the development of the communication subsystem on behalf of the main contractor Airbus Defense and Space. The communications subsystem will communicate with Earth during the eight-year journey to Jupiter and the subsequent science phase. “The system was designed, optimized, analyzed, integrated and successfully tested for four years by the Antwerp Space engineering team for the stringent requirements and harsh environment of the JUICE mission,” says Hugues Vasseur, Principal Engineer of the Antwerp Space team.

The development of a communication subsystem for a mission like JUICE requires in-depth knowledge and experience in space technology: The system will cover a distance of around 800 million kilometers for communication between Earth and Jupiter and must withstand the extreme environmental conditions around Jupiter.
