The organizers of the events have withdrawn all three protest events planned for August 18 at the Riga Castle and the Freedom Monument, but law enforcement agencies are preparing that an unannounced gathering of people could take place, the agency LETA found out in the Riga City Council.
According to the Communications Board of the Riga City Council, three protest events had previously been announced at the Riga Castle and the Freedom Monument, which would take place between 8 pm and 9.30 pm.
These events have been actively promoted on social network platforms and elsewhere by Saeima deputy Aldis Gobzems, who invited people to participate in them.
As Linda Ozola (JKP), Head of the Security, Order and Corruption Prevention Committee of the Riga City Council, explained to LETA, the responsible authorities are following what is happening and the State Police responsible for order is preparing for unauthorized activities.
For its part, Riga Municipality has promised all the resources available to it and mobilized the Municipal Police, which will operate according to the plan developed by the State Police, similarly to the mass events on May 9 and March 16.
According to the information at her disposal, an unorganized gathering may take place on August 18, so the responsible services are preparing for it. Riga City Council, for example, is ready to set traffic restrictions or changes in the flow of public transport if such a need arises.
“Riga City Council will provide all the necessary support to the State Police,” Ozola said.
As reported, the State Police (VP) has carefully evaluated and prepared its resources to ensure public order and security elsewhere in Latvia, especially at the planned mass events in Riga, LETA previously informed the LP.
The police are ready for any event and situation, will work accordingly according to the prepared plan.
