Bill 59, presented by Minister of Labor and Employment Jean Boulet, is the revision of two important laws on health and safety at work, which date back 40 years.

The bill, which has 300 articles, will now be the subject of a detailed study by the Committee on the Economy and Labor.

A reform has been demanded for years, both by employers – who find the scheme too expensive – as well as by unions and organizations for the defense of accidents at work, who particularly deplore that too many sectors are not covered by all the mechanisms for prevention.

Minister Boulet nevertheless said he was “very happy” that the principle of his bill was adopted Tuesday evening.

Recently, regional public health directorates criticized the bill, saying they feared a setback, with a return to private company medicine rather than independent occupational medicine.
