Observing the Super Blue Moon Phenomenon in Alien Village, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta

Kulon Progo – The peak of the Blue Moon phenomenon occurs on Thursday (31/8/2023) night. This attracted astronomy activists to make observations in Alien Village, Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY).

From monitoring detikJogja at this location tonight, dozens of space activists from various backgrounds were seen crowding into the Alien Village in the Kembang Village, Kapanewon Nanggulan, Kulon Progo. For those who don’t know, Kampung Alien is a natural laboratory initiated by three non-profit organizations namely the Indonesia Space Science Society (ISSS), Indonesia UFO Network (IUN), and the House Of Natural Fiber (HONF) Foundation.

The astronomy activists gathered to see first hand the Blue Moon phenomenon, namely the appearance of the second full moon that occurs in the same month. This phenomenon is quite rare because it only occurs every three years.

The initiator of the Alien Village from ISSS, Venzha Christ, said that the Blue Moon observations were part of the astronomy and space science education program in the Alien Village. This activity is a place for anyone who wants to learn about the world of outer space.

“Yes, this is the first stage, because we have an astronomy and space science education program, so anyone is welcome to join, both academic and non-academic,” said Venzha when met at the location, Thursday evening.

“So coincidentally, Indonesia’s 31st month coincides with the occurrence of a Super Blue Moon. The last Super Blue Moon is 2019, so this is what we are then looking for loopholes on how to educate on lunar issues, planetary issues, solar system issues can be combined with activities related to This Super Blue Moon is so that there is an attraction for friends to study,” he added.

Venzha said that the process of observing the Blue Moon uses five reflector and refractor type star telescopes. Through this telescope, participants not only witness the Blue Moon directly, but also celestial bodies such as the planet Saturn.

“Earlier, we were also able to observe Saturn directly and some of Saturn’s satellites were also visible in the observation earlier,” he said.
