Obama: – – We must be concerned

Former United States President Barack Obama says in an interview with CNN that he is still concerned about the state of the democratic system in the United States, following the attack on Congress on 6 January.

“We must be concerned, when one of our major political parties is willing to embrace a mindset about our democracy that would be unrecognizable and unacceptable just five or ten years ago,” Obama told CNN.

He says that he is frightened, among other things, by the fact that “large parts of Congress” accepted the lies that led to the storming of the Congress building.

Obama hopes the next election will be more peaceful.

– Dark forces

– I hope the tide turns, but it requires that each of us understand that this democracy experiment is not self-excluding. It does not happen by itself, says Obama.

He says he noticed a divide in American politics in 2008, when John McCain elected the controversial Sarah Palin as vice presidential candidate.

“With Palin, it seemed as if the dark forces that had long lurked in the shadows of the modern Republican party found their way into the spotlight,” Obama said.

Boasted of the daughters

In the interview, the former president highlighted his daughters, as he has done so many times before.

– My daughters are so much wiser and more sophisticated and talented than I was at their age, he says and laughs.

– When people talk about what I leave behind, the children I raised during the eight years I was president are part of it. There are many basic assumptions about what the country can do, and what the country should do, that I think have taken hold. They still believe in it, and are willing to work for it, Obama says.
