NYC Shares Recommendations to Fight Climate Change – NBC4 New York

During Earth Week, the New York City Parks Department shared on its website some recommendations for New Yorkers to combat climate change through action.

The path to a greener, more resilient planet can sometimes seem overwhelming and out of your hands, the department says. But there are ways they can create a more habitable planet. The Parks Department takes these simple steps to fight climate change in New York City:

Take care of the trees on your block

You may not have the resources to care for every tree on the planet, but you can start by caring for the tree on your block. Trees offer clear environmental and ecological benefits to the city. They clean our air, keep us cool, save on energy bills, and provide a healthy environment for future generations. The first step in caring for a tree: Use the New York City Street Tree Map to learn how to water, weed, and plant street trees.

Bicycling

Riding a bicycle helps reduce pollution levels in the city. Air pollution remains a serious threat in New York City. That’s why the department asks New Yorkers to help “achieve the cleanest air quality of any major US city.” by 2030 just riding a bike. Riding a bike requires no fuel, unlike most cars, buses, and other motorized vehicles that release toxic gases in the city. You can use the New York City bike map and plan your next trip.

become a guardian of parks

Meet other environmentalists working every day to make New York City greener. The department’s management team cares for street trees, forests, and wetland areas, and helps monitor wildlife that plays a vital role in the ecosystem. Sign up for an upcoming program to help plant trees, restore wetland areas, and care for baby trees. Learn how you can become a volunteer park manager.

Grow a pollinator garden

With the changing weather, the pollinators that help grow food, such as birds, bees, bats and butterflies, are at risk. You can help provide a safe haven for food and shelter by growing a pollinator garden with native plants. Learn more about how you can support pollinators.

Help keep parks clean

Help keep green spaces beautiful and thriving for the environment, wildlife, and each other by leaving no litter. If you want to do more to help keep the parks clean and beautiful, you can participate in events here.
