NEW YORK — Applications for permits to have and carry firearms at home and on the street have doubled in New York in the last year, according to data from the Police Department, which, however, does not specify how many were approved, according to data from the Gothamist news portal obtained by the transparency law.

According to Gothamistin 2023 the Police received 13,369 requests to possess a pistol or rifle at home, which is 80% more than those the department received in 2022, and almost triple the requests in 2019.
The item that reflected the largest increase, according to the Police data reviewed by the newspaper, was the permit to carry a concealed weapon, which went from 258 in 2019 to 6,751 during 2023.
Applications to carry concealed weapons in public made during the first two months of this year show that they are going down the same path, already exceeding the total for 2019, 2020 and 2021 combined, of 975, to now reach 1,822 applications, according to statistics revealed published by the newspaper.

Gun business owner John Deloca confirmed to Gothamist that he has seen a large increase in the number of customers purchasing guns and signing up for concealed carry permit classes.
“We are selling weapons like pancakes,” he stated graphically.
