How Mitsubishi Fuso Responds to Flood of Imported Chinese Trucks in Indonesia’s Nickel Mines: Market Leader Faces Competition

Jakarta

Imported trucks from China flooded nickel mines in Maluku and Sulawesi. How does Mitsubishi Fuso respond which claims to be market leader in the commercial vehicle segment?

“Whether the rise of imported vehicles will create competition, we admit that yes, but we are sure that consumers will consider many things when making a purchase,” said Aji Jaya, Sales & Marketing Director of PT Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian Motors in East Jakarta, Thursday (14/3 /2024).

Aji explained the reason why market demand for commercial vehicles has decreased compared to 2022. One factor is that 2023 is a political year.

“Some business people tend to be careful in investing,” said Aji.

He continued that the commercial vehicle market was declining because the prices of several commodities fell.

“In the commercial segment, there are several contributors (sales); mining, plantation, manufacturing, construction and logistics and lastly, others. “Of the business sectors that currently make a large contribution to commercial sales is the logistics sector,” said Aji.

“In other sectors plantation and mining In 2023 conditions will not be better than 2022. This is due to economic turmoil impacting demand for these commodities. Nickel goes down, palm oil goes down. So sector mining and plantation “We still consider this to be stagnant, what is growing is logistics,” he explained again.

Commercial vehicle sales fell compared to 2022. The national commercial vehicle market experienced a contraction with a market volume of 84,957 units or a decrease of 9% compared to 2022. Mitsubishi Fuso took up 33,283 units of the market.

In more detail, the biggest contributor to sales came from Canter in the light duty truck (LDT) class with 29,062 units with a market share of 53%. Meanwhile, in the medium duty truck (MDT) class, the Fighter X recorded positive growth with a market share of 18% or 4,179 units.

As previously reported by detikcom, Japanese brand trucks may dominate Indonesian roads. But when it comes to nickel mines in Morowali (Central Sulawesi) and Halmahera (North Maluku), the most popular are the red trucks from China, the Shacman brand.

Motor Sights International (MSI), Shacman’s distributor, explained that it had sold more than 6,000 trucks in Indonesia since 2016, of which 95 percent of sales were used in Morowali and Halmahera.

Even on the Shacman global website, it is stated that the nickel project in Indonesia is Shacman’s success in Asia Pacific.

“The Indonesian Nickel Project is a shining example of SHACMAN’s success in Asia Pacific. With an impressive sales record of 3,000 trucks and pre-ordered spare parts worth ¥60 million,” the statement read.

Chinese trucks flooding nickel projects is also reflected in data from the Central Agency for Export and Import Statistics for 2023. It is written in the Harmonized System (HS) nomenclature 87042369 which also includes imports of dump trucks from China. The goods were sent to nickel production projects such as Morowali, Weda, Obi Island.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita did not deny that thousands of mining trucks operating in Indonesia were still imported. In fact, he said, these vehicles should be produced domestically.

“I got a brief from friends at Gaikindo (the Association of Motor Vehicle Industries), many of the trucks used by operations and partners in Indonesian mining are imported trucks, and the data, if I’m not mistaken, is almost 6,000 units. The trucks used in mining are imported, even though the industry is in country can supply to the mine,” said Agus at JCC Senayan, Central Jakarta, recently.

His party is currently preparing regulations that limit the import of mining trucks. However, he could not confirm when the regulations would be issued and what the details would be.

“With the influx of imports that do not meet standards, for us that is the case opportunity lost for domestic industry. “Because of that, the Director General’s colleagues will see what regulations can be issued to help absorb the domestic truck industry,” he said.
