The number of infections, deaths and hospital admissions continues to fall. This is apparent from the preliminary figures of health institute Sciensano on Tuesday. It is expected that the infection rates will rise again quickly, now that the omikron variant is dominant.

Between December 18 and 24, an average of 6,471 people were infected with the corona virus every day, a decrease of a quarter compared to a week earlier. In total, 2.1 million people have been infected with Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
During the same period, an average of 69,300 tests were taken daily, a decrease of 8 percent. The positivity ratio is 10.8 percent and the reproduction number is 0.81.
The number of hospital admissions is also falling further. Between December 21 and 27, an average of nearly 136 people were hospitalized daily, a 29 percent decrease. There are currently 1,959 people in hospital (-26 percent), of whom 613 require intensive care (-16 percent).

Every day, an average of 36 people still die from the effects of Covid-19, a decrease of 8 percent compared to a week earlier. In total, 28,200 people have already died from a corona infection in our country.
In the meantime, more than 4 million Belgians have already received a booster shot, which corresponds to 35 percent of the entire population.
