Nuisance caused by partying young people in hotels: ‘There is not much else to do’

With the falling room rates due to the corona crisis, hotels in the city are increasingly dealing with nuisance-causing young people. ‘They book rooms separately and turn it into a party.’

The police do not want to speak of a new phenomenon yet, but do confirm that there have been several incidents in hotels in recent weeks in which young people rented a hotel room and caused nuisance.

The Amsterdam department of Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN) has heard about the problem from at least three hotels in the city. ‘Because of the corona crisis, hotels have lowered their prices, sometimes as low as forty euros a night. If a group of young people all put in ten euros, they can quickly book such a room. There is not much else to do in the city. ‘

Night porters beaten

Van der Valk Hotel Amsterdam Amstel in East is one of the hotels that deals with partying young people. At the end of last month, two night porters of the hotel were assaulted for denying visitors with laughing gas entry.

“It is a difficult situation, because we want to remain hospitable,” says Van der Valk spokesperson Vincent van Leeuwen. ‘We have tightened up the door policy in response to the cases. We use the human knowledge of our porters to see what kind of guest we are dealing with. In addition, the person booking the room must identify himself and have a valid credit card. ‘

Amsterdam problem

According to Van Leeuwen, it is a real Amsterdam problem: it does not occur in any of the other Van der Valk hotels in the country. The Van der Valk hotel on the Zuidas also has nothing to do with it. ‘I think it is because the hotel in East is easily accessible from the city center by bicycle, for example. We have also heard from other hotels in the city that they have this problem. ‘

According to Het Parool Hotel Ibis Budget Zuid also sees more and more young people passing by. The hotel would receive daily calls from young people who want to book a hotel room. Due to the conditions, such as registering a credit card and checking birth dates, young people usually drip there.

The police in Zuid are in consultation with the municipality to inform other hotels of the nuisance youth. They will also approach schools to discuss it with their students.
