NTT increases data center space by 20 percent

The business area Global-Data-Centers NTT is expanding its global data center space by 20 percent to create a connected future that will benefit enterprise customers and hyperscalers around the world. According to the IDC Market Scape 2021, this makes NTT one of the market leaders for global data center colocation and interconnection services.

NTT operates data centers in Europe, North America, Africa and Asia and also has a strong presence in India. The ICT service provider can provide supra-regional data center networks between key markets such as London, Singapore, Tokyo and Virginia. The expansion of the data center services ensures more capacity and better network connectivity in all regions:

  • EMEA: Last year, NTT opened additional data centers in Amsterdam as well as in Munich and Frankfurt, thereby consolidating its position as the leading provider of data centers on the German market. In the UK, the new flagship London 1 data center opened in December. Once fully expanded, it will increase NTT’s UK capacity by 200 percent, strengthening the backbone of the UK finance, media and gaming industries. In addition, NTT has invested in new cables and fiberglass technology to connect all of the data centers in London.

In the next two years, the ICT service provider will increase IT capacity in the EMEA region by over 40 percent. There are currently 13 new data center buildings under construction in nine stores in six countries, which means that NTT can provide 115 MW of additional IT capacity on 50,000 square meters. NTT will set up its first data centers in Madrid and Johannesburg; further buildings are being built in Vienna, Zurich, London and throughout Germany, including the expansion of network connections.

  • America: In the 2020/21 fiscal year, NTT opened three new data center locations in Hillsboro, Oregon, Santa Clara, California, and Chicago, Illinois, and also expanded the data center campus in Ashburn, Virginia. The 190,000 square meter campus in Hillsboro consists of five data centers with 126 megawatts (MW) of planned IT capacity and Subsea Connect, a transpacific network connection service. This service connects Hillsboro and Tokyo in Japan via the NTT Pacific Crossing (PC-1) subsea cable system. The Phoenix, Arizona campus is expected to open in early 2022 and is the seventh data center location in the United States. NTT’s Phoenix PH1 will have a capacity of 36 MW and is the first of seven planned data centers on the 240 MW campus.
  • APAC: By the end of the year, Jakarta 3 in Bekasi (about 30 kilometers from the Indonesian capital Jakarta) will provide 15 MW of IT capacity. Thanks to NTT as the network operator, customers can then very easily connect to Internet nodes (IX) and Internet service providers (ISP). In addition, the ICT service provider Cyberjaya 5 in Malaysia has started up with 6.8 MW IT capacity and is planning to expand the campus by a further 6.8 MW. In Tokyo, NTT has built a new data center with an IT capacity of 21 MW. In response to strong customer demand, the company is considering further expansion in Bangkok, Thailand, Greater Osaka, Japan, and South Vietnam.
  • If: The first hyperscale data center park in India will soon reach the capacity of 85 MW IT load. Mumbai 8 on the Chandivali campus is responsible for this. In the next 18 months, four more hyperscale data center parks will develop their full potential: two in Navi Mumbai and one each in Chennai and Delhi. On an area of ​​50,000 square meters, the new data centers offer around 133 MW of IT capacity. The connection between ten data centers across India will be completed this year. NTT is planning landing stations for submarine cables in Mumbai and Chennai, which will further consolidate its position as number one in the Indian market.

In addition to expanding its global data centers, NTT is currently working on the “MIST” project, an undersea cable system that connects Singapore, Malaysia and India (Mumbai and Chennai). The MIST cable system will have a total length of 11,000 kilometers, which is a longer distance than a flight from New York to Tokyo. The completion of the project is planned for mid-2023.

The infrastructure combination of the significant expansion of global data center capacity in connection with NTT’s status as a global tier 1 network service provider offers companies a secure platform for the growing need for comprehensive ICT services.

Global-Data-Center.Interconnect (GDCI) is an integrated global network structure service that creates a private and secure connection to large cloud service providers via a single physical port. The port itself supports the operation of several virtual networks. The GDCI service expands NTT’s ability to provide a digital and networked high-speed backbone across all global markets. The growing underwater cable system will also help to provide cross-regional connections between data centers.
