Taliban Says Not Knowing Al-Qaeda Leader Lives in Kabul

The United States (US) ‘claims’ to have killed the leader of Al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri at his safe house in Kabul. Taliban claimed not to know the Al-Qaeda leader lived in Kabul.

Reported by CNN, Friday (5/8/2022) Taliban claim they did not know of Ayman al-Zawahiri’s arrival until they stayed in the Afghan capital.

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has no information about Ayman al-Zawahiri’s arrival and stay in Kabul,” the Taliban said in a statement Thursday.

The Taliban said it instructed investigative and intelligence agencies to carry out an investigation into this.

“The leadership of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has instructed the investigative and intelligence agencies to carry out a comprehensive and serious investigation into various aspects of the incident,” the Taliban added.

Killed by Missile

As reported by Reuters, Thursday (4/8/2022), US officials previously said Al-Zawahiri was killed in a two missile attack fired by a US military drone as he stood on the balcony of his safe house in Kabul on Sunday (31/7) local time. .

Al-Zawahiri’s death was confirmed by US authorities, with an unnamed senior US administration official saying US intelligence had established “high confidence” through various intelligence channels that the man killed was Al-Zawahiri.

The US has called Al-Zawahiri’s death the biggest blow to al-Qaeda since the death of Osama bin Laden in US special operations in Pakistan more than a decade ago.
