NRW: Curious find discovered in the Rhine!
Using a photo, the Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum in Düsseldorf confirmed that the animal was a seal. In fact, it is rather rare for such an animal to get lost in the Rhine, but not uncommon.

Warning from experts
Zoo director Jochen Reiter now warned curious people: “The last thing such an animal can use is sensational tourism”. That means: Please leave the seal alone. The seal will probably soon swim back to the coast, where it apparently came from, Reiter believes.
However, the seal in the Rhine doesn’t have to starve: there are enough fish there, according to the expert.
This is not the first time Robbe has been sighted in the Rhine
It is not the first time that a seal has explored the Rhine. An animal of this species was already sighted in Düsseldorf’s Medienhafen in 2014. At that time, passersby had discovered the seal. And that was exactly what the zoo director warns of this time: a boat from the water police frightened the seal, it dived – and probably swam all 270 kilometers back to the North Sea alone. (JHE)
