Nintendo’s quarterly report for the fourth quarter of 2022 shows that a total of 8.2 million units of the various versions of the Switch were sold. This means that a total of over 122.6 million units have been sold since the portable gaming console was released in 2017.
Thus, the Switch has now sold more copies than both the Sony Playstation 4 (117.2 million units) and the combined sales of Nintendo’s own Game Boy and Game Boy Color. Only Nintendo DS (154 million units) and Playstation 2 (at least 155 million units) now have sold better.
Nintendo’s other consoles have sold differently over the years, from a paltry 13.6 million units of the Wii U to close to 102 million units of the Wii.
Despite the passed milestone, Nintendo is pessimistic about the near future, and lowered the forecasts for the next quarterly report (which will also be the annual report for the company’s broken fiscal year). The company had expected rising demand when component shortages eased in the second half of 2022, but that didn’t happen.
