After a long period characterized by sun and high temperatures, a decisive change on the weather front could probably happen immediately after the Ponte di Ognissanti when it is not excluded that a period of clear autumnal mold will open with bad weather conditions in many regions for the entire first decade of the month, but above all with a gradual drop in temperatures, which would thus return to the averages of the period within a few days.
The cause must be sought in the impetuous entry of one disturbance downhill from Northern Europe, supported by colder air of polar origin. Eyes focused above all on contrasts, sometimes extreme, which risk being created precisely on Italy. The still very high temperatures of our seas (up to + 4 ° C compared to the average, see attached map) could in fact provide a surplus of potential energy (high levels of humidity in the lower layers of the atmosphere), which is the fuel needed for it development of particularly violent thunderstorms.
According to the latest updates, the hypothesis that is taking hold is that a Mediterranean cyclone can form moving from the Ligurian Sea towards the Tyrrhenian Sea. These atmospheric structures can persist for several days, causing heavy rains with cumulative of over 2/300 liters per square meter in no time e storms along the coasts more exposed.
So will it rain all month? Not really.
Taking a look at the long term, indicatively after the middle of the month, we do not exclude the possibility of a return of atmospheric stability with temperatures once again above average, a bit as has already happened in recent weeks. In common jargon, when a high pressure phase dominates for several days causing an almost total absence of rain and a climate that is more late in summer than in autumn, we speak of Ottobrata (this year we had exceptionally three!).
It goes without saying that in November we should talk about November. We coined this term precisely to underline what could be a new, anomalous climatic phase.
