Not Only Covid-19, Rabies Vaccination is also Promoted in Yogyakarta

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta – In the midst of the incessant Covid-19 vaccination, the Yogyakarta City Government has also stepped up rabies vaccination in 45 kelurahan starting the first week of September. Rabies vaccination is to prevent rabies from developing and maintain rabies-free status in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY).

In order to avoid crowds, vaccination locations will take place such as green open spaces, community halls and adequate places, including the animal polyclinic which is managed by the Agriculture and Food Office of Yogyakarta City. This vaccination is free and can also be accessed at 10 veterinary practices in the city of Yogyakarta.

Suyana explained that this year’s rabies vaccination event collaborated with the Indonesian Veterinary Association (PDHI) with vaccine stocks from the government. “So the vaccination period can be longer and make it easier for the public to access,” said Suyana.

Head of the Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health Section of the Yogyakarta City Agriculture and Food Service, Sri Panggarti, added that vaccination is also in collaboration with animal-loving communities who have shelters and care for stray dogs and cats. It is certain that wild animals and the origin of the shelter are not vaccinated.

The condition is that the animal must be in a healthy condition and endeavored to be given deworming medicine a week before the vaccination process to maintain its health. The vaccinated animals are also not pregnant and breastfeeding.

According to Suyana, rabies-free vaccination was held simultaneously. The difference is, at the provincial level, it will be held longer, namely until October 30, 2021. Province DIY became one of eight provinces in Indonesia that have been declared free of rabies and require mass vaccination to maintain that status.
