The story that McCartney blew up The Beatles came about after McCartney first said in April 1970, when asked by a journalist, that The Beatles no longer existed. “I was tired of being silent.”
In the interview with the BBC, he calls this period the most difficult of his life. “This was my band, this was my job, this was my life, I wanted to keep going.” He doesn’t rule out that the band would have gone on much longer if Lennon hadn’t left.
Radio play
McCartney also says in the interview that a long-lost radio play by him and Lennon has been found. It’s about a mother and daughter and a mysterious guest house guest. “It’s a funny piece that Pilchard and it’s actually about the Messiah,” McCartney says.
Streaming service Disney+ is coming in November with a six-part documentary about the end of The Beatles. Looking ahead, McCartney spoke to the BBC radio program This Cultural Life. The BBC will broadcast that interview on Radio 4 on October 23.
