Suara.com – In the midst of the impact of the corona virus pandemic, Michigan, The United States, is threatened with the spread of another potentially deadly plague from mosquito bites.

Adapt Channel News Asia, Friday (18/9/2020), the authorities in this state are stepping up efforts to prevent the outbreak east horse encephalitis resulting in brain infection.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said it had increased the intensity of mosquito repellent spraying in high-risk areas in the west.

This step was taken after authorities found 28 horses and one human had been infected with the disease.

The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) has been found in a number of regions of the eastern United States and the Midwest, but generally rarely affects humans.

This disease is said to kill up to 30 percent of infected people and can cause long-term neurological damage.

The CDC last week reported that five people in the United States had been infected with the disease in 2020. However, this figure does not include cases in Michigan.

Prevention efforts were immediately carried out, with the authorities on Wednesday (16/9) night spraying Merus 3.0, a vegetable insecticide, in several states.

The state’s health agency also advised residents not to go out during spraying given the side effects of mosquito repellents.

The state has also warned residents to close ornamental fish ponds and reduce outdoor activities to reduce the chance of mosquito bites.
