However, there is less overtime: more than 61 percent of employees sometimes work overtime during the corona period. Before the crisis, 75 percent of employees sometimes worked longer.
Hooftman: “Fewer people work overtime, but the people who do that work more hours. For example, someone in the financial department at an airline has been very busy with the handling of the vouchers, but a flight attendant is not. ” The employees who worked overtime for corona used to do this on average 4 hours a week. By mid-2020 this had increased to 11 hours per week.
Burn-out
There has also been a shift in how working from home is experienced. In the first weeks of the crisis the researchers asked questions about working from home to a group of 500 workers every day. Hooftman: “In the beginning people felt less productive, but afterwards that was a kind of start-up phase where people had to get used to and create a good workplace at home. Later the same people said that they worked more productively at home than in the office. But there are also pitfalls: only one in four homeworkers takes a short break in between, which is of course not good. “
The number of burnout complaints remains high at 17 percent, but has not increased during the corona months. However, a shift has taken place. Hooftman: “For the people who work on location, healthcare has outpaced education when it comes to burnout complaints. Education scores highest for working from home and teachers already scored very high in terms of overstrain for corona. What is striking are the ICT. Burnout complaints among this group have increased since corona. “
