Norwegian unveils works of art on the Viva ship

The cruise company Norwegian NCL announced today the commission of British digital artist Dominic Harris to create an interactive piece of art exclusively for the ship Norwegian Viva.

Debuting this summer, Norwegian Viva will feature The Concourse an impressive art display on Ocean Avenue, featuring six modern sculptures by artists such as Kevin Box, Eric Levy and Sophie Elizabeth Thompson.

Dominik’s new piece, entitled “Every Wing Has a Silver Lining”, will be displayed in the Metropolitan Bar of the Viva ship, and will feature Harris’s iconic butterfly motifs. Each silver-winged digital butterfly will dynamically respond throughout the day to passing movement, creating engagement with the viewer. It is a huge piece that is 16 meters long.

NCL’s Artistic Director, Sarah Hall, says: “We are delighted to unveil our first interactive digital artwork on board Norwegian Viva this summer. Dominic’s creative vision for this unique and special piece drew us in from the outset, and we knew the concept and design would seamlessly complement the Metropolitan Bar. I hope that guests will feel as mesmerized interacting with Dominique’s art as I did.”

Dominic Harris says, “As an artist, I am excited by the idea of revealing the inner child hidden in the heart of every adult. I want my artwork to serve as a mirror, reflecting both the outer self of the observer and my fascination with the amazing ‘butterfly effect’ that weaves its way through our existence.” I want every viewer to feel that their interaction with “Every Wing Has a Silver Lining” is an exhilarating dance with something huge, powerful and truly meaningful.”

Norwegian Viva will begin sailing itineraries to the Mediterranean in August 2023, calling at major port cities in southern Europe, including Lisbon, Portugal; Venice (Trieste) and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy; and Athens (Piraeus), Greece. She will then sail in the southern Caribbean for the 2023-2024 winter season.
