Norwegian Politics, Politics | The Conservatives and the Liberal Party are raging against the MDGs’ car policy:

The Conservatives and the Green Party warn against the MDGs’ hostile car policy and believe it could have major consequences for individuals.

The Storting election is fast approaching and the red-greens are ravaging at the top of the polls. The Green Party has been in the fifties for a long time, and is gaining more and more voters from the younger group of voters.

Now the Conservatives and the Liberal Party warn against what will happen to car policy in the country if the party comes to power. In recent years, the MDGs have turned car policy in Oslo upside down, and the right wing fears the party will do the same with the rest of the country.

– It is gratifying that the MDGs are only becoming clearer and clearer that they are car-hostile. Then the voters know what they stand for, and what they get, says Bård Hoksrud in Frp to Nettavisen.

Will remove parking spaces

Acting head of MDG, Arild Hermstad, has previously stated to Nettavisen that the party will make major changes in car policy if they come to power.

– If we come to power nationally and gain influence, we both want to make it easier for the municipalities to remove parking spaces and we want to make it easier for the municipalities to lower the speed limits, Hermstad told Nettavisen.

The Progress Party’s transport policy spokesperson, Bård Hoksrud, believes it is good that voters get to see how car-hostile MDGs are before the election.

– Now MDG wants to roll out the radical policy they have pursued in Oslo to several cities in Norway. Parking spaces will be removed and no-go zones will be introduced for petrol and diesel cars. Even the electric cars will not go free from this, they say that right now, Hoksrud says to Nettavisen.

He adds that people have different needs, and that more households need a car in everyday life. It is about the cities being much more than just pedestrian streets, he points out.

“I believe, in contrast to Hermstad, that the car naturally belongs in our cities, and is very critical of removing thousands of parking spaces,” Hoksrud told Nettavisen.

– Hopeless politics

Hoksrud receives support from the Conservative Party’s transport policy spokesperson Helge Orten, where he adds that such a car policy will weaken the competitiveness of the business community and make it more difficult for people to get to and from work or leisure activities.

“MDG has made the car the main enemy and will cut massively in road construction throughout the country,” Orten told Nettavisen.

– Bad roads are just bad transport policy and it weakens traffic safety. If we are to reduce emissions, we must continue to phase in zero-emission vehicles and make the car fleet emission-free.

The town adds that it will be positive for urban development that it is arranged for better conditions related to means of transport such as public transport, cycling and walking, but that everything must be done in moderation, he emphasizes.

– There will still be people who for various reasons are dependent on the car, and we are dependent on efficient transport of goods, also in urban areas, Orten says to Nettavisen.

MDG’s objective

MDG believes there are several good reasons to remove the cars. In the main, the party wants the cities to develop areas for playgrounds, trees and cycle paths. The leader of the MDG believes that parking spaces often obstruct such areas.

At the same time, the party will be more careful with car traffic in the districts. Here, the party would rather roll out several benefits for those who want to drive an electric car. In this way, the party will not cut car traffic, but rather cut emissions.

In a statement to Nettavisen, says MDG leader Arild Hermstad, that the party wants to reduce the number of cars in Oslo. This means that it is not just a matter of replacing fossil cars with electric cars, but that the entire sum of cars driven in the big cities must be cut.

Hermstad also adds that we must stop building highways, so that municipalities can more easily create a more vibrant city life.

Several polls show that the Green Party is attracting more young voters. Climate and environmental policy look set to be one of the most important issues for many in the younger group of voters leading up to the election.
