North Korea launches ballistic missile towards Sea of Japan: South Korean military

North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan on Thursday, two days after launching a similar bullet at Japan, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported.

North Korea launched “an unspecified ballistic missile into the East Sea,” the Korean name for the Sea of Japan, Yonhap wrote, citing the South Korean military.

The new shooting comes as the United Nations Security Council met in New York to discuss Tuesday’s shooting.

According to Seoul and Tokyo, the North Korean missile has traveled around 4,600 km, probably the longest distance Pyongyang has ever reached in its tests.

South Korea and the United States responded Wednesday by firing five ballistic missiles – one of which crashed after launch – at fictional targets in the Sea of Japan. The day before, the air forces of the two countries had conducted precision shooting exercises in the Yellow Sea.

Seoul also announced the return to the region of the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, which conducted exercises with the South Korean Navy in September.
