North Carolina Man Wins $25,000 a Year for Life in Lottery, Shares his Winning Strategy

RALEIGH, North Carolina. – A man in North Carolina played the lottery always using his family’s birthday. Last week he became the lucky winner of a prize of $25,000 a year for life in the “Lucky for Life” drawing.

“I’ve been playing the same numbers every day since the game started,” said Paul Caudill of the city of Winston Salem. “The numbers are all different birthdays for people in my family,” he added.

Caudill said he thought there might be a mistake when he first saw that he won.

“I thought there must be a mistake,” he laughed. “I couldn’t sleep the rest of the night.”

He bought his $2 lucky ticket at 1 Stop on West Mountain Street in Kernersville, North Carolina. He won his prize by matching all five white balls in the draw.

Caudill became one of two North Carolina players to hit all five white balls on the same day. The other ticket was sold at Charlie’s Tobacco Outlet on Eastchester Drive in High Point.

After recently retiring, Caudill said he already knows what he wants to do with his winnings.

“I can pay for my house now,” he said.

Caudill claimed his prize Monday and had the option of receiving $25,000 a year for the rest of his life or a lump sum of $390,000. She chose the lump sum of $390,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $277,879.

How to play Lucky for Life

Lucky for Life is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of purchasing their tickets through a retail store or online.

Lucky for Life drawings are held every night. The odds of winning the $25,000 a year for life prize are 1 in 1.8 million.

The Mega Millions prize for this Tuesday’s draw has reached 1.100 million dollars, thus becoming the third largest in its history. The $1.1 billion figure is for the winner who chooses to have the money delivered in annuities: 30 payments over 29 years. If the lucky person prefers to receive the cash prize immediately, the estimate is $568.7 million. But where you win the prize matters: While all players must pay federal taxes, state taxes vary. These are eight states where state taxes are not paid in case of winning a lottery prize. That means that the number that the winner would take this Tuesday would be $363.4 million if he chooses the cash prize or $696.1 million, divided into 30 monthly installments, according to the site usamega.com.
