NO TO VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN! – Midweek

Eha Võrk, president of KENA

On November 23, the Women’s Assembly of the Central Party KENA organized a meeting on the topic of violence against women.

There was a lot of interest in the meeting, it shows the fact that violence against women has not disappeared and on a more positive side, that we, women, are more courageous to talk about this problem.

November 25 has been designated by the United Nations as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of violence against women, which takes many forms – physical, sexual, psychological and economic. Violence against women is a manifestation of unequal power relations, and its negative impact is manifested not only on women, but also on families and the entire society.

Families where mothers, women suffer from either mental or physical violence, it is quite likely that a similar pattern of behavior will be passed on to the children – girls suffer violence as women, and boys, when they become men, continue the customs of their fathers. Thus, it is extremely important to break the violent streak. Violence is not the bad behavior of individuals, it is part of a system. Violence is about power. Women can’t escape from a relationship, they can get out of it if they have the chance. An important place is POSSIBILITY. In most cases, the system does not offer an OPPORTUNITY, so women are trapped in relationships and suffer mental, physical and economic violence, which is passed on to new generations.

Do we recognize violence? What is the most common type of violence? How to report it? Why can’t you get out of an abusive relationship?

We searched for answers to all these questions together with Kristiina Luhti, who is the head of victim assistance policy at the Ministry of Social Affairs.

The leader and organizer of the meeting was Reet Trei, vice president of KENA.
