Normally, the people of Dendermond should have already celebrated their big Ros Carillon festival in May this year. But the corona crisis put a stop to that. City council and Ros Carillon Committee decided in the spring that the decennial ommegang could not take place at the scheduled time and moved the event to Sunday, May 30, 2021. But now that this date is getting closer and the corona crisis is still raging, a new decision arises. “Everyone expected that the Covid crisis would be resolved fairly quickly and that we could resume normal life,” says Mayor Piet Buyse. “We now know better. Having patience for a year to see Ros is not enough. ”

No perspective
Precisely because the pandemic is still in full swing and still dominates our daily lives, the Ros Carillon Committee once again turned to organizing the event. “Rehearsals should actually start at the moment, but that is not possible. Certainly not for larger groups such as the Painter, the Ros Beiaardharmonie or the dance and theater associations, ”Buyse says. “There is also no perspective from the government that major events again, and without a strict maximum of 400 people, would be possible in the spring of 2021. That way we cannot properly prepare our meeting, let alone have it take place.”

The Ros Carillon Committee believes that even if the long-awaited vaccine is available, it will be too late for an ommegang in May 2021. “And even if the situation for outdoor events were to ease enough, there are still many important indoor aspects associated with it. at the Ros Beiaardommegang ”, it sounds. “Two thousand extras have to change in classrooms, there are numerous catering arrangements, there is collective transport in buses and trains, … And on top of that, there is the international context, with many participants, suppliers and spectators coming from abroad. . None of that is possible within the corona crisis. ”

Total party
So there is only one conclusion: It is impossible to organize a Ros Beiaardommegang by May 2021 that meets all the expectations of the Ros Carillon Committee and the public. “In particular, a safe, high-quality and experience event for young and old,” says Buyse. “A Ros Beiaardommegang must be able to be organized in all its glory: different generations must be able to party carefree when their Peirt travels through the streets. It must be a total party, or nothing at all. And so it only remains to postpone again. ”

Together with the decision of the postponement, the Ros Carillon Committee is immediately launching a new date: Sunday, May 29, 2022. “We immediately link to this with another important message: the Ros Carillon Committee remains committed to the tradition of an ommegang at the beginning of each decade. The next edition after 2022 will therefore take place in 2030 anyway, “it sounds.” That means waiting an exceptionally 12 years now, but after that only 8. “
