No general speed limit on German motorways

The German parliament voted on Friday on the proposal to set the speed limit on motorways at 130 km / h. Both the Senate and the House have not followed the proposal of the environment committee. At the end of January, government had already ruled out this idea.

The German Parliament was considering a major reform of the Highway Code, with higher fines for parking in double file or on the sidewalk, and more cycling cities. But one point crystallized all the opposition: the proposal for a general limit to 130 km / h which came from the Social Democrats and the Greens.

Three motivations for this: the environment, security, and then the concern for harmonization at European level, because Germany remains a special case, an island in the center of Europe where the limit varies between 110 and 130, even 140 km / h as in Poland. The builders were opposed to the measure, as were the Christian Democrats. The main German automobile club has just reviewed its position and says it is open to discussion.

Everything remains as before on the autobahn. Remember that a recommended speed still exists, at 130 km / h, and that on many sections the speed is permanently or temporarily limited.
