Nikki Haley withdraws from Republican primary – 2024-03-09 05:21:26

The former United States ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, announced her withdrawal from the Republican Party primaries, this after having received a resounding defeat at the hands of Donald Trump on Super Tuesday.

During this event, held on Tuesday, March 5, 15 states voted simultaneously to nominate the presidential candidate who will represent the Republicans during the 2024 elections.

The results indicated that Trump won in 14 of the 15 states, these being Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Iowa.

For her part, the Republican official only won in Vermont. This single victory during Super Tuesday adds to the one she received in Washington DC in previous weeks, accumulating only two states in her favor.

Haley’s withdrawal was not immediate, and after the results, her campaign spokesperson, Olivia Pérez-Cubas, assured that the official was grateful for those who voted for her, and that she was proud to have been the first woman to receive victory in two Republican states.

“Today, in state after state, there remains a large bloc of Republican primary voters who are expressing deep concerns about Donald Trump. “That is not the unity our party needs to be successful,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

However, this Wednesday Haley made a speech in Charleston, in which she announced her retirement from the race.

The former South Carolina governor did not endorse Trump after withdrawing her campaign, as other candidates have done in the past.

“Now it is up to Donald Trump to win the votes of those inside and outside our party who did not support him. And I hope he does,” said the official.

“At its best, politics is about attracting people to your cause, not rejecting them. And our conservative cause urgently needs more people,” he added.

Trump currently has 995 delegates of the 1,215 he needs to obtain the Republican Party nomination at the next national convention that is scheduled in Milwaukee for July 15, so a rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden seems likely. imminent.

For his part, the president issued a statement after Haley’s departure, inviting the former governor’s followers to vote for him.

“I want to be clear: there is a place for them in my campaign. I know there are many things we will disagree on. But on the fundamental issues of preserving American democracy, defending the rule of law, treating each other with decency, dignity and respect, preserving NATO and confronting America’s adversaries, I hope and believe that we can find common ground,” declared Biden.

For his part, Trump also extended an invitation to the official’s followers, ensuring that joining him would be part of the “greatest movement” in the history of the country.

“Biden is the enemy, he is destroying our country. “Make America great again!” wrote the tycoon on the social network. Truth Social.
