Nicolas Toledo (76) was on Tuesday identified as one of the people who were killed in the mass shooting in the USA on July 4. It reports The Chicago Sun and New York Times.
At least 40 were injured and seven people killed when a person started firing at the National Day parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park. Hundreds of people in the parade, parents with prams and children on bicycles, escaped in an attempt to save their lives.
Would not watch the parade
On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Nicolas Toledo was one of the seven killed.
It was his grandfather’s grandson who identified him after the mass shooting.
According to his grandson, Xochil Toledo, his grandfather was not sure if he wanted to see the parade, due to the large crowds. Toledo used a walker and was afraid it would all be too tiring.
But the family did not want to leave him alone at home on National Day, so they got him along, and all went to the parade show.
Xochil tells The Chicago Sun that she looked at her grandfather during the parade, and makes it clear that he looked very happy.
– Grandpa saved us
Suddenly they realized something was wrong. They heard gunshots, people began to panic, and they realized that someone had opened fire on the crowd.
Bullets started coming at them, and three shots hit her grandfather and killed him on the spot, reports The Chicago Sun.
– He was the one who saved all our lives. The shots would go in me, my boyfriend or my cousins, she says.

Everyone was in shock
Xochil says that her father tried to shield his grandfather during the attack, and was shot in the arm himself.
Her father and a cousin held around Toledo after he landed on the ground as a result of the shots. At the same time, the chaos swirled around them, with people running to all sides in panic.
Xochil also says that her boyfriend was shot in the back during the shooting. Then she got someone random to take her boyfriend to a nearby hospital, because they were not sure if there would be enough ambulances for all the victims.
– We were all in shock. We cried. We could not believe everything that had happened, she says.
He is defined as “person of interest”, ie a person the police want to get in touch with.
He was at large for several hours, and heavily armed police conducted a series of raids in an attempt to find him. Just before 02 o’clock on Tuesday night Norwegian time, Crimo was arrested. He was arrested in Lake Forest, a few miles north of Highland Park, after a car chase.
It is currently unclear how Crimo will respond to the allegations against him.
The authorities have also gone public with a search for a silver Honda Fit, which they say is Crimo’s car.
