Nick de Vries has spoken out against the “brazen” people who have approached him after he made his F1 debut at Monza last year.
At last year’s F1 Italian Grand Prix, Nick de Vries was approached at the last minute by Williams F1 to fill in for the ailing Alexander Albon, and he impressed the F1 baddock with a performance that dropped him to ninth in the his debut.
Thanks to his strong performances, Nick de Vries has signed a contract with Scuderia AlphaTauri for 2023 to replace Pierre Gasly, who has moved to the Alpine F1 team.
Nick de Vries said the news was followed up with phone calls from people he hadn’t heard from for some time.
“I was surprised how cheeky some people were,” Nick de Vries told De Telegraaf.
“People I haven’t heard from in a long time, who weren’t my biggest supporters, have reached out to me again.”
“I don’t care how the outside world sees me. This is my first year in F1.”
“I want to pay homage through my performance, not through what I say on TV. I’m still the same guy I was before and nothing has changed in that regard.”
Ahead of his full-season F1 debut, Nick de Vries took on manager Guillaume Le Goff, who also looks after Pierre Gasly.
Nick de Vries, looking to impress on the F1 grid, has stressed the importance of having Guillaume Le Goff by his side.
“I feel like I’ve come full circle after all the twists and turns,” said Nick de Vries.
“My father and mother divorced when I was two. I grew up with my father and sister.”
“It may seem a little messy, but our family has always revolved around my career and racing, especially in the early days and now, so involved.”
“I need people around me that I can trust and grow with. For example, I’ve known Guillaume for more than 10 years.”
“My sister takes care of the goods and online shops. Behind the scenes, my father also takes care of various things.”
“Especially after the Monza race, all sorts of people suddenly came up to me and wanted something from me. I have to protect myself from that.”
