Nichelle Nichols died and was Lieutenant Uhura in the Star Trek TV series

Nichelle Nichols playing Lieutenant Uhura in the TV series between 1966 and 1969 earned her a position of honor throughout her life with fans of the series, better known as Trekkers and Trekkies. She has also earned her several accolades for breaking stereotypes limiting the roles of black actresses, often only used to play service personnel.




The historic interracial kiss –

And always in the Star Trek series there was the historic taboo broken, the interracial kiss with co-star William Shatner, Captain Kirk: in the episode “Humiliated by Force Majeure”, broadcast on November 22, 1968. Also the Martin Luther King Jr ., a well-known fan, had praised the role of Nichelle Nichols and personally encouraged her to remain in the series. Like other original cast members, Nichols has also appeared in six big screen spinoffs starting in 1979 with “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” and has attended hundreds of “Star Trek” fan conventions. She also served as a NASA recruiter for many years, helping bring minorities and women into the astronaut corps. Most recently, she had a recurring role on the television series “Heroes”, playing the great-aunt of a boy with magical powers.
