Nicaragua asks to leave the Organization of American States

Published on :

Nicaragua has officially requested to exit the Organization of American States (OAS). Last week, the OAS asserted that the Nicaraguan elections earlier this month (November 7) had been “neither free, nor fair, nor transparent”. The country risked a suspension anyway for not respecting the democratic rules defined by the organization.

A letter presenting Nicaragua’s request was sent to the OAS along with a copy to the media. Nicaraguan Foreign Minister officially announces his country’s withdrawal from the OAS. The decision is presented as an example of the sovereignty of the people.

Cuba welcomes the announcement

Without much surprise, the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs welcomed this announcement denouncing the collusion of the OAS with the United States and attempts to interfere in Nicaraguan internal politics. Article 143 of the OAS charter allows a state to withdraw from the organization. The procedure lasts a total of two years during which the country must continue to respect its obligations. Venezuela began a similar process in 2017.

Opponents arrested

Daniel Ortega has been at the helm of Nicaragua since 2007. He was re-elected on November 7, 2021. His most serious opponents were arrested before the election. A total of 39 people have been detained over the past six months. Their relatives said yesterday that they suffered serious physical and psychological harm as a result of their conditions of detention.
