ALice Daou is sitting in front of her house in pieces, in the district of Karantina, the closest to the port of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon which two weeks ago was the scene of the largest non-nuclear explosion on record. This 51-year-old Christian has her leg in a cast, as does her sister, Henriette, but they won’t leave until someone comes to rebuild the door and windows. “Nobody here is stupid. We know very well what is going on, they want houses to devalue and people, desperate, to sell. Because they don’t take mine, I always lived here, I don’t have debts. My sister and I are the owners of this house and we are not leaving here. ” Hezbollah, a Shiite militia and the only group participating in the Civil War (1975-1990) that did not surrender its weapons, is the terror of the neighborhood.
With her leg in that state, Alice Daou will not be able to expel the Hezbollah militants from her home, who at any moment expect to see them break up the road to take her Christian home and turn it “into a baby factory for war”. The horrific explosion of August 4, wiped out everyone’s patience, with what was left, the speech emptied itself of weight and the politically correct is not the priority when in the thinking of so many Lebanese there is a new war brewing.
