New York will know who I am: Kate del Castillo

When in July of last year Kate del Castillo debuted at the Minetta Lane Theater, on the Off-Broadway circuit, with the staging “The way she spoke”, obtained the best criticism of his career: “my dad (Eric del Castillo) told me: ‘I just saw a real actress on stage’, that coming from an actor like him made me very happy ”.

Months later, the effort he made with this staging is recognized by critics and theater mecca experts with three nominations for three very important awards: Lucille Lortel for Exceptional Solo Exhibition; Drama Desk in the Outstanding Solo Performance category and the Drama League Awards for Performance.

“These nominations give me excitement. The awards I always say that feed the ego, but it is also a recognition of your work, and see that I did not have a good time in the process because the theater is very lonely, more in a city that is not yours, in another country , with another language that is not the native one, it is hard; But it gives me great satisfaction and pride to be the first Mexican to achieve it, because I believe that in Mexico we need good news that elevates the spirit. “

For Kate, this work, written by Isaac Gómez and that addresses the story of the dead of Juárez, was challenging for her in every way, because she did not feel ready for such a project, where she gives life to 14 characters, and even, she assures , he regretted having accepted.

“Every night on an altar that I put in the theater, leaving my dressing room on my way to the stage, where the first eight women were found dead in a cotton field, I asked permission to use their voices to pass the message, to that this does not continue happening in the whole world ”.

The interpreter is aware that people place her more as an action heroine, for projects such as The Queen of the South (2011-2019) or Bad boys for life (2020), but she hopes that from this, the perception of the industry towards it change.

“I do this because it is what gives me food, because it is what I love most in this life and it is the only thing I know how to do. I never do a project thinking: they are going to give me an award, or for sure after this I will have economic and work stability. Long ago I had those expectations but then nothing happens, but at least now the world of theater in New York is going to know who I am. ”

Although del Castillo hopes to be able to return to the off-Broadway or Broadway circuit itself, he comments that no proposal has yet come to return to the tables, much less with the world crisis of Covid-19.

“Although I live in Hollywood, I don’t earn like the actresses here, I really live very up to date, but thank God they gave me a ‘lanita’ that I had to ask for from the series that I’m going to do (Women’s weapons, for Peacock), I have a own house, in that sense I am fine and I cannot complain, I am not afraid to be alone ”.
