New York tightens measures to quarantine UK travelers

New York, Dec 23 (EFE) .- New York announced on Wednesday new measures to try to guarantee that anyone arriving in the city from the United Kingdom follows the established two-week quarantine, which will include police visits and fines. $ 1,000 per day in the event of default.

“We are going to ensure that these quarantines are complied with,” said the mayor of the city, Bill de Blasio, when announcing the new guidelines, which respond to the increase in travel during the Christmas period and the new variant of covid-19 detected in the United Kingdom.

Although New York already imposed a quarantine on people arriving from abroad, measures will now be increased to ensure that this is followed.

Thus, all travelers will receive an official notification by certified mail about their obligations and, in the case of those arriving from the United Kingdom, there will be visits by the police to homes and hotels to ensure that the quarantine is respected.

In case of non-compliance, New York establishes a fine of $ 1,000 for each day of violation of these regulations, which seek to prevent the spread of coronavirus and, above all, to spread the new strain.

This variant, which seems to have a 70% greater transmission capacity and whose appearance has led many countries to veto flights from the United Kingdom, has set off alarms among New York authorities, who are fighting to stop the second wave of the coronavirus in the city.

This Wednesday, the governor of the state, Andrew Cuomo, again attacked the federal government for failing to take action and, at least, requiring a negative covid-19 test to board flights from the United Kingdom.

Faced with this situation, Cuomo this week asked the three airlines that connect British airports with New York – British Airways, Virgin and Delta – to test passengers and they have agreed.

In addition, the governor has ordered hospitals to test the new strain to detect if it is already in New York and to try to prevent its spread.

The USA is the country in the world most affected by covid-19, with more than 18.2 million cases and more than 322,800 deaths, according to independent data from Johns Hopkins University. EFE
