First modification: 05/14/2020 – 15:31

Until now parents in New York had breathed a sigh of relief; It was believed that the new coronavirus did not affect children but older people with pre-existing health conditions. But something is alarming New York families as the Health Department is investigating more than one hundred cases of minors who have a rare syndrome related to Covid-19.

A strange disease is affecting children with Covid-19. This is the pediatric multisystemic inflammatory syndrome; a picture that if not detected in time, can be fatal.

The Governor of New York. Andrew Cuomo addressed this question, in personal terms: “As a parent I can tell you, this is every parent’s worst nightmare. We thought that the boys were not affected by the virus as much and now it seems so. This is really disturbing. ”

The Department of Health investigates 102 cases of minors who present this rare condition related to Covid-19. A 5-year-old boy, a 7-year-old boy and an 18-year-old girl are the first fatal victims of the disease.

Dr. Dina Peralta, Director of Pediatric Medicine, Lenox Hill Hospital mention the following symptoms:

  • Fever for more than 4 days
  • Abdominal pain
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea.
  • Patients have conjunctivitis, rash, skin rashes.

“The most important thing is that children and adolescents who present these types of symptoms are evaluated by their doctors“Says Dr. Peralta.

According to Bill de Blasio, New York City’s Head of Government, the number of cases is increasing daily and there are currently more questions than answers. “We don’t know what makes children particularly susceptible, why some boys and not others; how long it takes to manifest in the child; what is the window; that way we know how much time we have to save the boy’s life; what is the probability that a boy will develop this syndrome. That’s what we don’t know, but we do know that early detection and early treatment make all the difference. ”, exposed the leader.

New York City is preparing a communication campaign to raise awareness about this new syndrome and that affected children and adolescents be treated on time.
