New York Marathon is canceled due to Covid-19 pandemic

The world famous new york marathon, planned for November 1, was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers said Wednesday.

This is the second time this test has been canceled, one of the world’s most popular marathons and that has been disputed since 1970. The previous suspension occurred in 2012 after the passage of Hurricane Sandy.

“Canceling this year’s marathon is a great disappointment to everyone associated with it,” said Michael Capiraso, CEO of New York Road Runners (NYRR), organizer of the event, quoted in a statement, “but that was clearly the way forward in view of health security “.

New York is the city in the world most affected by Covid-19, with more than 22,000 deaths.

Organizers will offer entrants to the New York City Marathon the ability to have their entry fees refunded or postpone their participation to 2021, 2022 or 2023.

“I applaud the decision of New York Road Runners to prioritize the health and safety of spectators and runners, “New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in the statement.

Contacted by AFP, NYRR vice president of media Chris Weiller said that prior to the cancellation, the organization expected “more than 53,000” runners this year, including some 25,000 from overseas.
