The numbers are shocking: According to John Hopkins University, 10,764 people have now been infected with the corona virus in New York City, 99 people have died there of Covid-19 so far. For comparison: There are currently 24,873 corona cases and 94 deaths throughout Germany (as of March 23, 6:40 a.m.). New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has now sounded the alarm.

New Yorkers have to keep their distance now

De Blasio appealed to the citizens of New York to keep their distance from one another and to keep walks and necessary shopping to a minimum. There are already around a third of all cases recorded in the USA. The mayor spoke of a “new reality” that could last for weeks or months.

Exit restrictions in New York

Exit restrictions have applied to the 19 million people living in New York State since Friday. From Sunday evening, shopping centers, hairdressing salons, libraries and other “non-essential” facilities had to close. Most companies are only allowed to let their employees work from home. Schools, museums, cinemas and many shops have been closed for days. Gatherings of people in parks or on playgrounds are also not allowed.
