New York hit by heavy snow storm

A heavy snowstorm is sweeping across the northeastern United States. Flights and trains are canceled, and corona vaccinations have to be postponed. Video recordings show New York in a state of emergency.

A heavy snowstorm caused traffic chaos in the northeastern United States. In the metropolis of New York and in other cities, hundreds of flights were canceled for Monday, and numerous trains were canceled. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency, roads were kept free for the use of emergency vehicles, and all unnecessary journeys were restricted. Up to 60 centimeters of fresh snow

Up to 60 centimeters of snow were expected in the big city. The national weather service warned of heavy snowfall and strong winds for the entire northeast coast from Virginia to Maine. The authority spoke of “Blizzard-like conditions”.

“This winter storm is going to be dangerous, stay at home if you can,” warned Mayor de Blasio in the short message service Twitter of the more than eight million New Yorkers. The schools were closed for Monday and Tuesday, planned corona vaccinations were postponed.

In the midst of heavy snowfall, clearing vehicles were on the move in New York. La Guardia Airport canceled 90 percent of all flights, JFK and Newark Airports canceled 70 percent of flights.

New Jersey and Philadelphia also declare a state of emergency

The state of New Jersey and Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, were also in a state of emergency. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy warned of power outages and called on residents to recharge electrical appliances.

In Washington, several centimeters of fresh snow had already fallen on Sunday night. The residents of the US capital were happy, built snowmen and went tobogganing. The giant pandas in the Washington Zoo, on the other hand, got by without a sledge: They simply slid on their backs or rolled down the unfamiliar track.
