New York extends corona measures and converts 11,000 hotel rooms

New York. In the US state of New York, which has been particularly hard hit by the corona pandemic, the relatively strict exit restrictions have been extended until mid-May. In consultation with other states in the region, the restrictions were initially extended until May 15, said Governor Andrew Cuomo at his daily press conference on Thursday. How it goes after that, one has to see. Among other things, the restrictions stipulate that people should stay at home as much as possible, “non-essential” shops must remain closed.

In the meantime, however, there are also increasing signs of a trend reversal in the crisis. The number of patients in the hospitals fell again on Thursday, as did the number of patients in intensive care units and on ventilators. But there are still almost 2,000 people with the virus who come to hospitals every day, Cuomo said. 606 deaths from the virus were recorded in New York on Wednesday. That was the lowest daily number in over a week. “This is still going on at a really tragic, tragic rate,” said Cuomo.

In total, more than 200,000 people have already been infected and more than 11,000 have died in the state with around 19 million inhabitants.

The Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, also announced that 11,000 empty hotel rooms will be repurposed. The city intends to use the rooms as quarantine places for people in densely populated apartments, for residents of homeless shelters and for health care workers who did not want to infect their family members, informed de Blasio.

The city of New York also expects the budget to decline by 7.4 billion dollars in the next 15 months because of the coronavirus, said de Blasio. He called on US President Donald Trump and Congress to inject money into cities and US states. “If you lead, the Senate will follow. If you keep silent, you won’t. It’s up to you, Mr. President, ”said de Blasio at a press briefing. He spoke to Trump on Wednesday and told him that his hometown needed him.
