Nearly 1,400 people have filed a class action lawsuit against the city, citing police tactics and unlawful arrests by NYPD.
New York City is set to reach a settlement to pay $13.7 million in a class action lawsuit brought by nearly 1,400 people who participated in protests over the death of George Floyd.
The agreement, filed Wednesday in federal court in Manhattan and subject to a judge’s approval, provides for the payment of approximately $9,950 to each of the 1,380 protesters who ” were arrested and/or subjected to force by NYPD officers ».
In total, New York City police made more than 2,000 protest-related arrests over a 10-day period following Floyd’s death. Although the protests were largely peaceful, they served as a catalyst for burning vehicles and looting, which forced then-mayor Bill de Blasio to institute the city’s first curfew in 75 years, reports the New York Times.
After the curfew was introduced, police used questionable and illegal tactics against protesters who spoke out against police brutality, including excessive force, the use of batons and tear gas, and the ” kitten where protesters were sandwiched between approaching lines of police, preventing them from fleeing.
New York City had previously agreed to pay $21,500 to 320 protesters involved in a June 2020 protest in the Bronx; in addition, more than 600 people have filed individual complaints against the city over the 2020 protests, resulting in settlements of approximately $12 million, reports theAssociated Press.
However, the $13.7 million settlement would be the largest in city history, surpassing the $10.3 million New York City paid hundreds of wrongfully arrested people at the 2004 Republican National Convention.
