New York City Mayor allows New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square to continue: “It’s going to be a great party” | Abroad

“We want it to be big, we want it to be full of life, we want a great party,” said an enthusiastic de Blasio. All attendees who are eligible for a corona vaccine, people who are at least 5 years old, will have to show proof of complete vaccination and their identity card. Visitors who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons must present a negative test.

Children under 5 years old must be accompanied by a vaccinated person. In general, people who have not been vaccinated must wear a mouth mask. New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers will check on those in attendance.

The square with the huge illuminated signs normally gathers hundreds of thousands of people to ring in the new year, but due to the corona crisis, Times Square was largely empty on New Year’s Eve last year. Only a few hundred aid workers and their families were then invited as a tribute. The traditional ‘ball drop’ will also take place again this year. The time ball, which the New Yorkers lower 43 meters each year, signals the start of the new year.
