New York Billionaire Must Return Illegal Antiques

Published

The American Michael Steinhardt has collected 180 illegally acquired works of art valued at 70 million dollars. These now go to the state. In addition, he is no longer allowed to buy antiques.

After years of investigations, the US billionaire Michael Steinhardt (80) handed over 180 illegally acquired antique works to the authorities and is now banned from buying antiques for the rest of his life. It is the first such ban that his agency has imposed, said the New York prosecutor Cy Vance on Monday.

The antiques handed over by the investment banker, with a total value of around 70 million dollars, would now be returned to the eleven countries from which they came – including Syria, Israel, Greece, Egypt, Italy and Turkey. “For decades, Michael Steinhardt has shown a greedy appetite for looted artifacts, with no concern about the legality of his actions,” said Vance. Among the pieces are, for example, works of art, masks and bowls.
